This Saturday, and on several other occasions throughout the 2017 Alaska Cruise season, three large ships will converge at Canada Place cruise ship terminal bringing as many as 14,000 guests in a single day to start or finish their cruise vacation. These three ship-days reveal that the 30-year old Canada Place was never designed to handle the ships and guest volumes that are commonplace today.

Cruise ships, together with their passengers and crew, make a significant annual contribution to the Canadian economy. Cruise industry spending is increasing at a healthy rate in all three of Canada’s major coastal cruise regions – BC, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

During 2016, cruise ships made approximately 1,200 calls in ports in BC, Quebec and the four Atlantic provinces, generating a total of 2.23 million passenger visits. BC accounted for 63% of Canada’s cruise passenger visits, the Atlantic provinces accounted for 26% and Quebec accounted for 11%.
